Chamberlain abstraction from auto salvage at Saint Louis Art Museum
I identify with the Mad Man era of advertising. It was a time of creative leadership and exploration of consumer motivation. Bill Bernbach, David Ogilvy, Rosser Reeves, Jerry Della Femina and even (to a lesser extent) the contributions of Philip Kotler to the understanding of just how adverting should effectively support a brand and respectfully allow consumers to make choices based on very real unique selling points.
But now I'm not so sure. I was attracted to advertising in the first place because I believed that it was where "art meets commerce". The digital disruption, AI and technology that suggests that no thought at all need go into the business of what used to be affectionately referred to as the four P's (Product. Price, Promotion, Place).
Honestly, the messaging now feels heartless and unfortunate to me. Even with the production value and story telling creates some interest the feeling I get it that companies do not work as hard as they once did.
Consider some of the following bits an pieces of marketing communication and ask yourself if there is any true value in the messaging.
- You can save if you bundle your Home and Auto Insurance
- Tell your doctor if you have redness or swelling between your anus and genitals
- Just scan this code and see if the benefits of Medicaid Advantage are right for you (co-pays, vision, dental etc.)
- Call now and you can have a new bathroom installed in one day (maybe even with zero interest and no payments for up to a year)
- Just 63 cents a day can feed a hungry animal. We urgently need 3,000 donors to help rescue animals.
- Act now and we'll send you an adorable blanket.
- Sign up and you can save money every time you buy gas.
- One dime down and you can buy a new car
- Start growing your brand today with Spectrum. You can reach up to 97% of your prospective customers where they are,
- Injured? Call our law firm. We win,
- If you haven't called Senior Life Insurance, you're probably paying too much
- There is over 30 Billion set aside... Contact our law firm and you may be entitled to compensation.
Are you talkin' to me. Yikes.
